Meet Alanna D’Aries, RD, CDN, CNSC

Hello! My name is Alanna. I’m an anti-diet, weight inclusive dietitian. I know, that’s a mouthful! This simply means that I approach nutrition with the belief that all foods offer nourishment to our bodies. I don’t center weight in the discussion of health and embody an acceptance model with each and every one of my clients.

While my counseling approach is informed by various frameworks, like Intuitive Eating® and Health at Every Size®, I’ve learned that my clients are the ones who teach me the most. You see, health is a relative term and doesn’t look the same for everyone. Nutrition is only one aspect that influences our whole-health and I hope to help you gain deeper understanding of what health looks like for you. The way we relate to food and our bodies tells a much more important story than what or how much we eat. Without getting to know and challenge our thoughts, beliefs and perceptions around food, we never really give ourselves a chance at sustainable behavior change.

I like to think that I’m a lifelong learner and unlearner. I’ve come a long way from where I started. I, too, once believed that being healthy meant controlling food and my body with rules and militant exercise. I mean, we were all raised in a culture with dieting and weight-controlling messages; a culture that worships thinness and capitalizes on the stigmatization of larger bodies. It feels impossible to get away from the cultural narrative that your body can’t be trusted. While, as you read this, that might feel entirely true based on your lived experience, your body is not, and has never been, the problem.
